Vitamix 5200 Blender – The Smoothie Guy

If you blend a lot and prefer to have more flexibility over the texture of blend, then Vitamix 5200 blender is your guy. The Vitamix 5200 blender sits in a middle price range of Vitamix blenders. It’s still very powerful, comes with a 64 oz jar and variable speed control only.

Today, we’ll see if the Vitamix 5200 blender is the right blender for you. We’ll look intro how well it blends, what it can blends, how to clean it afterwards and bottom line if it’s worth buying.

Is Vitamix 5200 Blender the Right Choice For You?

Vitamix 5200 blenders is for people who wants to have a blender that is powerful, built well and reliable, has a big jar and doesn’t cost a fortune.

Unlike many other Vitamix blenders, a 5200 has a variable speed control only. Meaning, it does not have a pulse option or pre-programmed buttons.
5200 sits in the middle price range of Vitamix blenders, and most say it’s the smoothest blend you can get without upgrading to a professional model.

64 oz jar vitamix

It does a perfect job on all fruits and veggies. It will pulverize seeds, like flaxseed and nuts. It may not be as powerful as Pro models but it blends just as well – let it run a little longer and whatever’s in there gets smoother and smoother.

Vitamix 5200 Blender Review – Vitamixs’ Smoothie Blender

I found out that surprisingly high numbers of people asking if they can use blender as a juicer when deciding for Vitamix 5200 blender. So let’s talk about this first.

Juicer and blender are two completely different appliances made to do completely different tasks.

Juicers is strictly for making juice. It’s job is to extract the juice (water) from the plants. So your juice is only what can be squeezed out of a plant. The solids of the plant goes to waste.

On the other hand, blenders blend food. They shred and cut and pulverize food into such a small pieces it is eventually in a liquid state. Blender unlike juicer uses the entire plant, fruit, vegetable and make it in a smooth concoction, smoothie. They don’t squeeze or extract.

So rather than asking if you can juice with blender, ask yourself this: do you want to create the healthiest and tastiest drinks?  If yes, than go and make a smoothie.

juice vs smoothie
Kiwi juice (left) and kiwi smoothie (right).

The advantage of blender and smoothies over juicer and juicing is more than just in fiber you get when using the entire fruit and not just “squeezables”. How much of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. are left in the plant itself after you extract out the “squeezables”? Plenty. Especially in non-juicy plants like; spinach, kale, carrots, etc.

So why not adding plenty more goodness to your drink, by making a smoothie? Plus you can throw in healthy juice, protein power, Zeolite and other ingredients in blender and it will blend it all into a very smooth drink.

But.. If a smoothie is not your idea of a healthy treat and you just want a healthy juice than I would go with a juicer, not blender. I hope this helps and clarify the difference.

How Well Does Vitamix 5200 Blender Blends

Let’s get back to our blender. As mentioned above, Vitamix 5200 blender gives the best blends without upgrading to a Pro series. Compared to the Vitamix Pro 750 series, which is a monster of a blender, 5200 blenders is only less than 200 Watts and 0.2 HP short on power – meaning it can still tackle anything you throw in it’s jar.

Speaking about jars, 5200 blender comes with a 64 oz jar, which is the same size as in Pro series.

If you’re buying Vitamix 5200 blender for personal use and are used of making small batches, you may want to consider getting a smaller jar.

The 32 oz jar is great for smaller servings, plus it’s easier to get the finished product out of the container.

To control the motor of a 5200, you simply have a variable speed dial. Pro series have additional Pulse option and pre-programed cycles.

speed control and blade
Vitamix 5200 blender has a wet blade and variable speed dial.

Because it only has a variable speed control, you are the brain behind the blend. You tame the 2 HP motor…which I think is where the creativity and knowledge comes out of you. It’s fun.

The best way to blend with a variable speed dial is to start on low, turn the dial up and then hit the lever for max. With the power it has, the blender does not struggle at all and the smoothie comes out nice and smooth. What a joy.

Smooth blends
VItamix 5200 blender makes smooth and even blends.

Vitamix 5200 blender, the same as Pro series will heat up soup you put in it from friction. Because the 5200 isn’t as powerful as the Pro series, heating up can take longer, but not more than a minute compared to Pro series.
In other words, it can blend just as well as the popular Pros. It may take it couple of seconds longer to blend, but the blend will be smooth and even.

What Can I Blend With a Vitamix 5200 Blender?

As far as it’s functionality, it has an incredibly powerful motor that crushes ice very quickly. It can blend any fruit, vegetable, grains, sugar, coffee beans, ice, etc.

With Vitamix 5200 blender you don’t have to cut things up before blending. You can, maybe, break a carrot in half but you can also just throw it in a jar and turn the dial. It does well with harder items, like ginger, beetroot, even whole (with the peel) citruses. It works quick so most of the smoothies are done in 30 seconds. For a full jar it takes longer, around 2 minutes. This is because the jar is huge and you can make large batches in it.

Also, if you are into making foods that are creamy like baby food, dressings and sauces, the 5200 blender will make you happy – no lumps and no chunks.

what you can blend
Just to give you the feeling of how versatile the 5200 blenders is: with the blender, you’ll get a Vitamix book. In it you can find recipes to prepare foods like soups, dips and spreads, sauces, breads, deserts, dressings and marinades and more.

How Do I Clean Vitamix 5200 Blender?

Like any other Vitamix blender.

The easiest way to wash it is right after you finished blending. Add a drop of dish washing detergent and 2 cups of warm water – or more, depending on the amount you just blended. Blend it on highest speed for a minute, then empty the jar and rinse it out.

From my experience, self-cleaning cycle is more for cleaning the blades which are really sharp. So if you grind anything greasy and thick, things will stick to walls and you’ll want to hand wash it.

How Noisy is Vitamix 5200 Blender?

All blenders are very noisy and Vitamix 5200 blenders is not an exception.

If anybody is around while blending, pause conversation until you’re done. The noise depends on what ingredients you are blending – frozen fruits at the beginning of blending are the loudest.

If you have sleeping children in the next room, save your blending for when they’re awake. Blenders are loud and there’s no way around it. They shred and cut and turn solids in drinks, they have to be loud.

Yay or Nay

If you are someone who spends time in the kitchen, wants a high-powered blender that isn’t going to burn out after a dozen times of making frozen drinks with ice, the Vitamix 5200 blender is the best investment you can make.

We all know Vitamix makes one of the best, if not the best blenders on the market. Knowing this, you cannot go wrong with Vitamix 5200 blender.

If you like to play and experimenting in a kitchen, Vitamix 5200 blender is you guy.

I got a feeling that 5200 is a Vitamix’s smoothie blender; Although it’s nearly as capable as Pro series a lot of people were asking about “juicing”, which in blenders is smoothie. Vitamix 5200 blender, with its variable speed dial, gives you nearly endless texture options and at the same time, let you be the blending boss.

So if you like to play around and experimenting in kitchen, 5200 is your best buddy – capable, sturdy and cheaper than Pro series. The best Vitamix blender you can get in this price range.

  1. Yay for me. Nice review. The problem with many of these blenders is strength of blending. I always have to take the beans to the market for grinding machines to grind just because we couldn’t use home blender to blend it well enough to make bean cakes. So reading this one is strong enough to blend its scores it a point from me

    • Hi Momoh, coffee beans are a tough cookie. For best and finest grind use a smaller 32 oz dry container, it does the trick in no time.

  2. I love something about this review. Honest, short,  precise and straight to point. I got to know about vitamix 5200 blender through my neighbor, so I decided to do some research about it and I landed here. I got a blender few months ago and I had to return it after an awful experience. I will give this vitamix blender a try.

    • Hi faftop, thank you and I’m glad you found what you were looking for. Make some fresh brownies and ask your neighbor to lend it for a couple of smoothies 😉 – it’s the best way to really see how capable the machine is.

  3. Hello Katya,

The vitamix 5200  is really an impressive blender because it is really very powerful. For smoothie lovers like myself, the vitamix 5200 blender is the right product to try out my smoothie recipes. I have a quick question, can I also use the vitamix 5200 blender to blend ice cubes?

    Expecting your feedback

    • Hi Louis, to answer your question, yes, Vitamix 5200 has enough kick to crush ice cubes. Since 5200 is completely manual controled, Vitamix instructions says to put ice cubes in a water, so the ice isn’t touching the blades. Then turn the dial all the way to 10, which is max. Flip the on/off switch couple of times – this gives you a “pulse” effect that Vitamix 5200 doesn’t have. Pour water away and done.

      For any questions, I’m here.

  4. Hi! I need a blender to prepare creamy food. And I was wondering if Vitamix 5200 was the right blender for me. And reading your post, I think I have nailed it.

I learned with your post that this blender gives us flexibility over the texture of blend. So I believe it can be used just fine for preparing baby food. I hate when blenders don’t do a good job and the food is left full of lumps. But I may not have that problem with Vitamix 5200.

    • Hi Henry, I’m glad you found it useful! Yes Vitamix 5200 is very flexible with texture and strong enough to demolish every lump and chunk. It’s great for baby food as well..since babies don’t like chunky food either 🙂

  5. That’s a great idea and effective for making a smoothies guy. I also like to eat smoothies. This article provides great information about the Vitamix 5200 Blender. Personally, I’m going to try the Vitamix 5200 Blender today as it works so good. A lot of advantages and work feature. Thanks for the descript about Vitamix 5200 Blender and review this product.

  6. Hi! Very narrowed and thorough post with all details served – you can’t miss anything because everything is well explained. I never own honestly any blenders, as I don’t like smoothies. Don’t get me wrong smoothies are good but my kitchen is maybe to crowded and small to fit a blender in, or maybe I don’t know. Do you maybe know how many veggies and fruits you are allowed to blend for one juice?

    Primoz P.

    • Hi Primoz,

there are no rules for smoothies 🙂 You go with whatever you like.

A friend of mine, for example, doesn’t like eating salads. No way, not going to happen. He likes the idea of eating healthy but chewing on salads. So he puts a bit of lettuce, tomato, carrot, cucumber, capsicum, salt, oil and vinegar in a blender and drinks that.

      No rules whatsoever 🙂

  7. Two of my favorite things Vitamix Blenders and Smoothies. Right now, we have Kale and Spinach coming in from the garden and it’s been great to mix up a fresh green smoothie each morning with our Vitamix 5000. The old trusted 5000 is beginning to show its age. We use our Vitamix for only smoothies and rarely for anything else. While we are not interested in a Pro series, the 5200 seems from your review to provide enough heft that we could use it for a variety of things if needed in a pinch. While we do like the pulse action in 5000 it is not necessary. Other than the pulse button, how much different would the 5200 or the 5000 be? What about the price?

    • Hi Steve, I believe both 5000 and 5200 have the same controls, so you can use 5200 just like you’re used with 5000. I guess the pulse button on 5200 is the one on the left hand side that goes from 0 to 10 in a split second.

From what I’ve read and seen, the major difference between the two is the spare parts availability (fingers crossed you won’t need it ever) and also the warranty on 5200.

      Hope this helps,
