What is the best electric pressure cooker

We all want more time, eat healthy, save money and have as little hassle as possible while doing so.

A good electric pressure cooker ticks it all – plus it gets a major bonus point on a healthy eating because it’s the best way of preparing food to preserve nutrients (Source:NutritionFacts.org ).

I’m going to go straight into it – after reading professional articles and reviews, comparing tech specifications and reading user reviews I came to a conclusion that the best electric pressure cooker is “Instant Pot DUO60 6 qt 7 1 multi use programmable pressure cooker“.

Sure, you can spend 4-times more on a highly regarded Breville but I feel, $260 is a bit much for a pressure cooker when you can have all you need for $70.

What to look for when buying the best electric pressure cooker

If you trust my research and decision on Instant Pot pressure cooker, thank you, and great, your search is over. However, if you want to do your research and come up with your champion, here are some information that will make your search and weeding easier.

When deciding what pressure cooker to buy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pre-programmed functions, models and brands available on the market.
You’ll see terms like: pressure cooker, slow cooker, crock pot, instant pot, multi cooker, steamer, etc.

The vast majority of electric pressure cookers offer other functions as well and you can consider them multi cookers. This is good news because one good electric pressure cooker can replace your rice cooker, slow cooker, yogurt maker and your biggest stove top pot.

To get the best bang for your buck when choosing your electric pressure cooker, go back to basics and ignore the fancy pants LCDs, custom alarm tones and touch pads – an electric pressure cooker was made to cook food faster, more efficiently and without supervision. The rest is more tech that can potentially gets broken.

Having said that, when you shop for an electric pressure cooker or a multi cooker, look out for these features first:

  • robust design with a heavy base,
  • stainless steel inner pot have a longer life compared to non-stick pot,
  • steam-release valve is a very important safety feature. It allows you to release steam in a controlled, safe way,
  • pressure indicator is another important safety feature which shows when it’s safe to open the pressure cooker,
  • timer, so you can put ingredients in the pot, leave the house and come home to a ready to eat meal in the evening,
  • size: a 3 qt will be enough for a couple, a popular 6 qt holds enough volume for the entire family with 4 members.

These 6 features are what your electric pressure cooker should have. Non-stick inner pots work as well but they scratch easier and are after some time hard to clean.

Because most of electric pressure cookers are really multi cookers, here are some very desirable features to look for as well in order to get the best value for your money and to keep your kitchen as de-cluttered as possible:

  • slow cooker for your stews that needs more time to soak, cook and mingle with flavours,
  • rice cooker,
  • time-delay function where you can tell it when it should start cooking,
  • keep warm function,
  • steamer is great if you want to avoid using oils, for example with coronary disease patients, high cholesterol people or diabetes patients.

These additional 5 options will cover the majority of your pot and pan cooking.

Now let’s see how Instant Pot does within these criteria.

InstantPot 7-1 features

Instant Pot DUO60 6-qt 7 in 1 multi-use programmable pressure cooker has all of the above mentioned features that makes a good electric pressure cooker:

  • pressure – release valve for controlled and safe steam release,
  • next to it is a pressure indicator valve that shows you when the pressure has dropped and it’s safe to open the electric pressure cooker,
  • it’s 6qt big and fits enough to feed a family of 4 or gives you enough to freeze what’s left,
  • it’s robust and made to last, with stainless steel inner pot that won’t scratch or stick and
  • a easy to use and understand timer and pre-programmed options, which brings us to the next, desired features.

Because the Instant Pot DUO60 6-qt 7 in 1 multi-use programmable pressure cooker is in fact a multi-cooker. This one pot appliance replaces up to 7 kitchen appliances and will save you some serious space, time and money.

From the pre-programed options you can see that instant Pot also serves as a:

The pros and cons of pressure cookers

Pros:

  • Less energy used than ordinary pot or pan,
  • shorter cooking times,
  • more nutrients kept in food compared to cooking in a regular pot,
  • less cooking odours in a house.
  • Can be used as a regular pot without a lid.
  • cooking without supervision.

Cons:

  • Take a while to get the hang of,
  • you need to be careful with releasing steam – it’s really hot and you don’t want to burn yourself (this is why you need a cooker with steam-release valve and pressure indicator).

The pressure is on

When buying an electric pressure cooker you can find prices anything between $50 and $500. While $500 is clearly an unnecessary stretch, the $70 Instant Pot model is affordable and a solid decision.

It’s a multi cooker which means one pot will take care of pressure-cooking, slow cooker, rice cooker, steaming, sauteing, yogurt maker, warmer and you regular stove top pot. Pretty thrifty.

What persuaded me was the time I can save, and that I can come home to a cooked meal. Although I enjoy cooking, after a long day at work, it’s such a treat to come home, take your shoes off and walk in a kitchen where you have a warm meal waiting for you.

You can make beans in 30min – you don’t even have to soak them overnight! Veggies steamed in 3min. Throw some salad with that and done. Dinner is served.

Another thing that played big part in my decision was that it’s cheaper, tastes better and healthier when you cook at home. Legumes are probably the cheapest and healthiest of foods on the planet, and you can prepare them in your pressure cooker in minutes. If you cook at home or you want to get more into a habit of doing so, pressure cooker can help you stay on your path.

As a busy person, who likes to eat well and struggles to fit everything it a 24hr frame, an electric pressure cooker sounds like a very good, stress free idea.

  6. Hello there, electric pressure cooker are so cool, they are one of the best means to having your stuffs ready in a really short time but then depending on how good your cooker is. Personally I don’t make use of any other means of cooking except my electric cooker and this have made me regular face at the supermarket where I buy these electric cooker.
Currently I am havingba manageable electric pressure cooker, I said manageable because its losing its efficiency ans I guess ts due to be replaced. From your description of this electric pressure cooker, its qualities are beyond the regular ones i have seen and wouldn’t want to miss it. If I can’t find it at the supermarket, hope I’ll be able to get it online, and the cost pocket friendly?

    • Hi Chloe, I love “traditional” cooking with a knife, pan and stove but on a busy week or over the weekends I do find electric pressure cooker can save you a Sunday or two. Instead of standing in front of the stove and checking the cooking progress (and don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy cooking and making my own meals)..but I’d also enjoy popping everything in an electric pressure cooker, turn the timer on and go about with family or friends. It’s like having a little house elf that helps you running a household 🙂

  7. This instant pot Duo60 6-qt 7 in 1 multi-use programmable pressure cooker is really a great appliance to have in the kitchen. It’s the programmable aspect, cooking without inspection part that I love most about it.

What I have in my kitchen now is a crown star 1.8 L rice cooker. I sometimes use it for steaming water or boiling yam too but since it is faulty now, I have to add this instant pot duo60 6-qt 7 in 1 programmable pressure cooker to my list of next appliances to buy.

Thanks for your advice on features to look out for.

  10. I love my pressure cooker it really reduces the cooking time in half. I did not know that there are electric option as well, this is great! My favorite dish that I like to cook is pulled pork shoulder and and just mix it with cilantro, lime and salt, so good. I also agree that $260 is a bit much for my family. It is just me and my husband and that big piece of meat will last us a week so we probably won’t be using a lot of it. I love the fact that it has so many functions, it is so cool that I can make my own yogurt! Would love to try it. Will have to tell my husband about Instapot. I think $70 for all that functions are totally worth it. Thanks for your amazing review!

  12. Hello Katya, getting a good pressure cooker would need you to pay attention to some really interesting details about the cooker else you will end up buying a product that is not good enough and i have been a victim of that. One thing i have always want in a pressure cooker is a good steam valve. The last cooker had a bad valve and it burned my little girl. I am particularly interested in the Instant Pot DUO60 6-Qt 7 In 1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker. It matched all my interests

    • I’m so sorry to hear that, Benson! Hope she’s well and that it wasn’t serious!!

Steam is a dangerous thing, as you can tell and this is why good steam valves is a must. I also always throw a kitchen towel over it just in case.

Hope the Instant Pot will serve you for many many years and with no incidents,

  13. Hi Katya!

Is 6qt the standard size for a pressure cooker? or can I get a bigger one. I have never used a pressure cooker before but I would like to give it a chance. Because I have started cooking classes I have to use them more often. So, I would like to have one that I can use daily at home, but we are a big family of 9, we all eat together. Ans a 6qt seem to be quite a small size. Kindly let me know if I can get the one with the timer on bigger size.

    Thanks

    • Hi love, oh that’s great! Your family sounds amazing!

      There’re 4 sizes – 3qt, 6qt – and then bigger sizes – 8qt and 10qt – I believe 10qt is the biggest one with big familites in mind 🙂

Here’s a link to the 10qt Instant Pot. Everything’s the same just bigger 🙂

      Enjoy your cooking classes!
